30-Day Blogging Challenge: Day 12: Me as a Teacher in 5 Years

Day 12: How do you envision your teaching changing over the next five years?

I was recently having a conversation about exactly this. In the next five years, I hope to continue to develop my own practice and help others to do the same. However, the path I'm going to take is uncertain.

There are lots of Blue Sky things I'd like to do in the future, including:
-study for a Masters degree
-become a full-time professor in the BEd program
-present at an international teaching conference
-reform curriculum
-open my own school
-write a book

I need to narrow down some of these dreams in order to get on a path to becoming Future Shauna. I'm just not sure which one is my most urgent goal.

Everything I'm doing now is in service to these goals, but it's been pointed out to me that I need to narrow my focus.

The one thing I do know is that I have no desire to leave the classroom in a full-time capacity. I get energy from working with students and am not willing to give that up.

Hopefully working with the Think Tank, Comment Consortium and inspirational colleagues will help me sort out the path I'd like to take.

  1. Shauna your goals will come true as you are a true thinker, you carry out what is on your mind and apply to your practice. Would love to open up my own school still wishing for that Lottery! I encourage to present internationally as I had this opportunity last year and would love to try it again this year. All the best and for sure you will be checking off your goals on the list soon. The best learning is with and from the students.

    1. Hi Rola,

Thanks for the comment and the encouragement. I agree that the best learning happens with and from the students and I really do not want to leave the classroom permanently - ever!

  2. Future Shauna sounds like she has a very full life. I'm excited to hear about her adventures and I'll be proud to say that I was a character in a chapter or two of her early years, you know, when she still had to buy her own markers and whiteboards. I think, like everything else, the truth will find a way to show itself. No need to stress about narrowing things down. In time, you'll find you're doing exactly what you should be, whether that's everything or nothing from your list. Like Trixie and App (or is it Helen and Gloria), you always seem to land on your feet in a place full of toys and with poise.

  3. Your goals are so adventurous and all totally achievable. I don't know if I have ever encountered another educator who would like to open their own school. I am curious to why and what your vision would be for that school.

    1. Hi Maria,

How long do you have!? I have a lot of ideas and vision for a school, and it's regularly growing and developing! Basically, though, I'd like to open an experimental school and try out innovative, varied and dynamic tools, techniques and strategies. I would love it to be a place that can be used as a prototype for other learning places.

  4. You never cease to amaze me. I love that your ambitions are lofty and that your love for learning and all things teaching shines through in what you do and all that you aspire to do. I believe that you would be successful in any of these ventures and understand that your heart lies in your very classroom but ... think of how many "inspirers" you would inspire in a BEd. program! What a great way for new teachers to begin their journey.
